![]() Psychology students were lead to believe they were taking a course on practical research skill in handling animals and duplicating experimental results. One of the most subtle and shocking demonstrations of an experimenter expectancy effect was undoubtably provided by Rosenthal in the 1960s. ![]() Of course, this becomes an even bigger problem if a researcher unconsciously treats people in the control group differently from people in the experimental group. Experimenter expectancy refers to an unconscious change in a researchers behavior caused by expectations about the outcome that influences a participants responses. If a researchers expectation have a biasing effect we call this threat to internal validity an experimenter expectancy effect. Experimenter expectancy and demand characteristics. I'll discuss two of these threats to internal validity right here. That can provide an alternative explanation. ![]() These expectations can lead to a change in behavior. ![]() Both researcher and participants have expectations about the goal of the study and about the desired behavior. And in most cases the people under observation are aware of being observed. In any scientific study the researcher has to observe the behavior of individuals or groups. This can be a reaction from the participant, but also from the researcher. Another category of threats to internal validity is associated with the artificial or unnatural reaction caused by participating in a research study.
